Towbar Regulations

Australian-Made. Built to Last.

Proudly locally owned and operated. Airglide Towbars delivers products that meet real Australian road conditions. Our air suspension mechanism is the only towbar in Australia with an integrated instantly adjustable air-cushion system. It protects your precious vehicle and cargo from the whipping and jarring forces transmitted from your truck. Every unit is manufactured for strength, precision and longevity.

Towing Legally with ADR-Compliant Towbars

When it comes to towing, compliance isn’t optional—it’s essential. At Airglide Towbars, we ensure every product and installation meets or exceeds Australian Design Rule (ADR) 62.02 standards.

We stay on top of changing regulations so you don’t have to. Whether you’re towing a caravan, livestock float or commercial trailer, we help you remain road-legal and road-safe.

What is ADR 62.02?

Towing with a 50mm ball has rules

As of 1st October 2017, 50mm Tow couplings will have to coincide with VSB6 Section P – Tow Couplings – NVHR. VSB6 Section P – Tow couplings

If an AS 4177.2 compliant 50mm ball coupling is used on a vehicle with a GVM of more than 5,000kg, the ATM rating of the trailer that can be towed decreases. We have developed the following Table for you as a quick reference for allowed coupling ratings. Vehicle Standards Guide 16 (VSG16) – 50mm ball couplings

Please refer to the chart below regarding the rules on the 50mm 3500kg ball and coupling (as at Nov 25).

For example:

A 16,000 kg GVM vehicle can only tow a maximum of 2337 kg ATM
A 22,500 kg GVM vehicle can only tow a maximum of 2242 kg ATM

Revised Coupling Ratings

Recent regulatory updates have changed how coupling capacities are calculated. These changes impact the load limits and legal fitment of many towbars across Australia.

We work with engineering specialists to ensure our systems are up-to-date with the latest requirements.

What We Offer:

  • Updated coupling ratings for all models
  • Engineering advice for custom setups
  • Compliance certificates and plating

Engineer-Certified Modifications

If you’re modifying your chassis, tray, or suspension, engineering certification is mandatory. Our team can assist with:
